The Best Way to Remove Hair From the Bikini Area

The Best Way to Remove Hair From the Bikini Area

There are pros and cons to every hair removal method, according to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. The technique you choose to remove hair that's exposed when you don a bikini depends on your budget, pain threshold and expectations. Consider all the options and risks because the pubic area is very sensitive.

Step 1
Clip off the longest hairs prior to shaving. Use sharp, clean scissors and stabilize your lower body by sitting or propping one leg up on a stable surface when you cut to avoid nicks.

Step 2
Soak in water to soften up the hairs and prevent razor burn, bumps and blisters. Sit in a tub filled with hot water for at least three minutes.

Step 3
Apply a moisturizing lotion that is designed for women to the area you plan to shave. Shave the parts of your skin that are revealed when you wear your bathing suit. Use a clean, sharp razor to prevent infections.

Step 4
Pull the razor in the direction of the hair growth to avoid shaving bumps. According to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, shaving is the most common form of hair removal.

Step 5
Rub the area with baby oil or oil that contains aloe vera to keep the skin smooth and free of rashes and bumps.

Step 6
Visit a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon for laser hair removal treatments if you're looking for a more permanent solution. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, after about three treatments, hair growth should be almost completely eliminated. The procedure utilizes a focused beam of light to kill hair follicles.

Tips and Warning
  • Since laser hair removal leaves a slight swelling for a couple days after each treatment, you should time your treatments for the winter months or during a time when you won't be wearing your bathing suit in public. If your pain threshold is relatively high, consider a Brazilian wax to remove all the hair in your public region. Hot wax is pored over the area and left to dry. The procedure can be performed at home or by a trained esthetician. Waxing is not permanent though it may pull out more of the root, giving you a hair-free look that lasts longer than shaving.
  • Astringents sting newly shaved skin and should be avoided after shaving the pubic area. In addition to cuts and razor bumps, possible side effects of shaving include irritation and itching, ingrown hairs and genital infections. Most of the side effects from laser hair removal are temporary, according to the American Academy of Dermatology and last an average of three days. Skin discoloration may be permanent however, especially on dark-skinned people. In addition to mild swelling, other side effects can include redness, blisters and development of the herpes simplex virus.
