Bikini Line Best Bets: The Top 5 Hair Removal Techniques

As the Sex Coach, many women ask me about the best way to remove hair "down there." It's one of the most common questions on the Ask the Sex Coach message board, but there is no one right answer for everyone. Because each of us has unique needs, tastes and, yes, styles, the real answer is: it depends. It depends on how much nuisance you are ready to face, how much (if any) money you want to invest, how painful a produre you think you can endure and then (for the fun part), what will make you feel the most erotic
alone and with a partner. After all, we're talking about the most private parts
of you, aren't we? If you're ready to try something new, there are five basic
options for taking it off. Each one should help you feel more sexy, more feminine and pleasing to both yourself and a partner. They vary in cost, work
involved, intensity of sensation and also how they make you look and feel.

Here are the basic options:

1. Shaving
2. Cream and Depilatories
3. Waxing
4. Btazilian Bikini
5. Electrical or Laser Treatment

1. Shaving

Description : Using a sharp razor, scissors or an electric shaver, shave off some or all of the hairs that grow over and around your pubic area.

Pros : It's cheap, easy and you can do it to yourself anytime, anywhere.

Cons : Shaving requires keeping it up; if you don't shave off the hairs regularly, you can expect to have that dreaded itch from the stubble of regrowth. Also, some women won't get the clean, stubble-free look they want with this method.

Tips : Use your regular conditioner on these hairs and you may find they come off more easily. Once you find a regular pattern, you won't feel itchy or uncomfortable. And if you find it appealing, you can use scissors to make pretty patterns for your pubic hairlines, such as a heart shape or a plain strip. Get more tips here.

Sexual Bennies :

  • Some men and women enjoy sharing a shaving session as part of their lovemaking rituals. Watching yourself be shaved can feel intimate, and sharing the ritualistic aspect of shaving each other's pubic areas can heighten excitement as foreplay for much more after you are done.Something magical happens when you alter your body image and use your body as a canvas. Try it.
2. Creams and Depilatories

Description : Remove hair from the bikini line by spreading on a thick layer of cream and waiting for 5-10 minutes. The cream makes the hair soft and easy to wipe away. Read more about creams and depilatories here.

Pros : Just as with shaving, this is a technique that is inexpensive that you can do yourself at home. Plus, you can be more aggressive about where you apply the cream because there is no risk of cutting yourself in that delicate area.

Cons : Most of these creams have a very unpleasant, chemical aroma. They can also sting your skin. Allergic reactions aren't uncommon so be sure to test out any product on your wrist first. And read the instructions carefully. I am not a big advocate of putting anything harshly chemical onto the inner labia or vulva, so go easy to avoid burning. Ouch! And again, some women will have stubborn hairs that are resistant to these creams, not producing the smooth results you're looking for.

Sexual Bennies :

  • Just as with shaving, you can share this as sexual ritual, especially as part of your foreplay experience.
  • You feel different and heightened sensations on your skin. You'll love the changes.
3. Waxing

Description : This procedure is usually done at a salon. To start, you lay on a table wearing your underwear (you can leave your top on). Hot wax is applied to the bikini line (and upper legs) with a flat wooden tongue depressor against the hairy skin. Then a strip of linen is layered on top and pressed down against the wax. Once it's adhered to the hairs, the practitioner rips the whole thing away in one quick motion.

Pros : This is an efficient and easy method for hair removal. Most women get great results: smooth skin, usually appearing as though you've never had hair there at all. (Note: This one is best done by a pro. It's hard to get at those angles on your own, plus it's not easy to put yourself through that much pain. Most nail salons now offer this at low cost, but you also can invest in your own home kit. Be sure to use your head when choosing a salon. Is it clean? Do you know someone else who went there and was satisfied?)

Cons : It smarts! Having someone zip a cloth full of hot sticky stuff across your flesh
-- yanking out your hairs -- does have some pain associated with it. And doing this yourself is messy to the max unless you're very skilled. It's also more expensive than shaving or creams. Regular maintenance usually requires a visit every month or two but even occasional trips will be an added cost to your budget. Some women will experience small red bumps. Get solutions for this problem here.

Sexual Bennies

  • Waxing will give you the smoothest results. Once the heat from the
zipping cools down and you have succeeded in removing all remnants of
stickiness, your skin feels alive and as smooth as silk.
  • There is less friction to prevent easy thrusting of the penis in and out of the vagina. Sexual intercourse can be better.

Bikini Waxing Pt. 8 (Excess Hair Removal)

Kate Weinberg is the Skincare Director for Oasis Day Spas in New York City. She is a New York State licensed esthetician with 10 years in the spa and salon business. An authority on all things skin, wax and makeup, she is always available at Oasis Day Spa to answer skin inquiries.

4. Brazilian Bikini

Description : A more comprehensive version of simple waxing, this method removes hair not only from the bikini line, but also tackles the inner thighs, buttocks (yes, most women have some hair there) and sometimes the entire pubic region. Read more about Brazilian bikini waxes here.

Pros : This is the Mercedes Benz of waxing. The pros always do it for you, removing all unwanted hair down there. You get to feel like a sexy temple Goddess when you're done and all you see is bared flesh inside and out.

Cons : It's pricey and it can be quite painful. Plus, the procedure is pretty invasive, so you need to be very comfortable with yourself. Most salons will require you to remove your underwear completely and in order to get at every possible angle, your practitioner will be moving your legs around and touching you in some very intimate ways. But, once you find someone you trust, the procedure becomes second nature. (Well, as much as any trip to the gynecologist or dentist does). Again, maintenance costs are high.

Sexual Bennies :

  • You are totally revealed, nothing held back! You get to feel in charge of your sexuality and your sensuous body in all of its glory.
  • Most men will tell you (and female partners, too) that oral sex on a woman who has removed her public hair is simply wonderful! Your lover
doesn't have to fight against friction to stop his tongue techniques
and, gulp, no nasty hairs between the teeth. Let him have that pleasure.

5. Electrical or Laser Treatments

Description : These treatments are always performed by a licensed clinician or M.D. Electrolysis removes unwanted hairs with an electric needle that probes into single hairs (one at a time), conducting an electrical current that kills the root and prevents regrowth. Laser hair removal uses the pulsation of a laser light to kill hair growth when applied to small areas (about the size of a quarter) around unwanted hairs.

Pros : These techniques are for permanent hair removal. If you can't stand those hairs, kill them for good.

Cons : These are expensive procedures. Electrolysis usually requires many visits before all hairs are removed for good. Over time, the cost can add up to hundreds of dollars. It's also very painful. Laser also requires expensive equipment and (hopefully) competent medically trained personnel, and costs could run to thousands of dollars. It can be painful and may require additional costs for numbing creams.

Sexual Bennies :
  • You'll never have to think about it again.
  • Your body feels smooth in ways that you can only imagine.
  • Many men adore seeing a woman's pubic mound naked, as a reminder
of her youthfulness (in a safe and appropriate way). Allow that to
    happen.

How To Guide : Women Shaving Their Pubic Hair

Women shaving their pubic hair is different than using the razor on legs
or underarms. You need a bit more patience and care because of this
sensitive zone and thicker hair type. While you might be able to get
away with a 'hurry up and get it done job' with other areas, but not
this one. Here we will show you how to get a close, safe shave while
avoiding common problems like nicks and ingrown hairs.

Time Required : 1/2 hour for women shaving their pubic hair Here's How :

  1. Choose your shaving cream wisely. For this sensitive body zone be sure to get and use a good shaving cream or gel, using soap is definitely out. The Art of Shaving, Unscented Shaving Cream (compare prices) is phenomenal for getting a smooth shave, moisturizing skin and preventing ingrown hairs.
  2. Don’t skimp on your razor.
Stay clear of the straight, cheap disposables or you'll be asking for
cuts and nicks. Instead use a razor with a pivoting head and multiple
blades to give you a smooth, close shave. My pick Schick Quattro for
    women (compare prices).

  3. Give a haircut.
Trim hair down first as short as possible by placing comb flat on the
skin and trim over comb with scissors, or with clippers using the
shortest guard. The less hair you start out with means less use of your
    razor.
  4. Take a warm shower or bath. At least 5-10 minutes of the heat will soften skin and relax the hair follicle.
  5. Exfoliate. Rid dead skin cells and provide a closer shave by using a mild exfoliator or your favorite body wash with an Ayate washcloth (compare prices) on your pubic area.
  6. Dab on some shaving oil. Working as a barrier on your skin, the razor will glide easier instead of dragging and moisturize skin. It also helps prevent razor burn, general irritation and ingrown hairs.
  7. Apply shaving cream or gel.
Make sure skin is damp but not overly wet. If you have a shaving brush,
work the product with the brush in circles to help lift hair and get a
    closer shave.
  8. Shave. Using a fresh blade, first go in the same direction of hair growth and then in opposite direction. Don't go over the same area too many times.
  9. Rinse. In between strokes, be sure to rinse blade. A clogged razor won’t work well.
  10. Cleanse. Rinse pubic area and pat dry with towel.
  11. Moisturize. Apply a light, preferably unscented lotion.
  12. Fight redness. There's a tendency for getting ingrown hairs. Flawless Ingrown Hair Serum (read review) can help with bumps, redness and ingrown hairs.
Tips:
  1. Keep all products on the outside of your body only. And avoid shaving during your period, as skin is more sensitive.
  2. If you are taking off most of your hair, a vaginal shield, the Va j-j Visor will offer you protection so you don't cut your inner vulva. Using a small mirror will also help you see better.
  3. Shaving while taking a shower, rather than a bath can make things easier because you can prop up legs on side of stall.
  4. If you're daring, you can create pubic hair designs at home.
  5. Shaving only takes hair even with the skin, waxing will keep hair away weeks at a time. You may want to consider a Brazilian wax.
 What You Need
  • Comb and scissors or clippers
  • New pivoting razor with multiple blades
  • Shaving cream or gel
  • Shaving oil
  • Shaving brush (optional)
  • Cortizone cream if pubic area starts getting itchy
  • Light, unscented moisturizer

Natural Way to Remove Bikini Hair

Natural Way to Remove Bikini Hair

Sugar waxing or sugaring is a method of hair removal that originated in the Middle East. The technique involves using a sticky paste to grab and pull out hair at the roots. Unlike traditional resin-based waxes, however, sugar waxes adhere only to the hair, not the skin, explains Susie Galvez, author of "The Thrifty Girl's Guide to Glamour." The result is a less painful and less irritating method of removal.

After centuries of use in the Middle East, sugaring is rapidly gaining popularity in the West. Numerous salons and spas perform on-site treatments, and commercial sugar pastes are available over the counter. Additionally, homemade sugar waxes offer a cost-effective, natural way to remove unwanted hair.

Sugar Wax Recipe

Step 1

Add the sugar, water and lemon juice to a saucepan and stir to combine.

Step 2

Heat the ingredients on low, stirring often. Bring the mixture to a boil, but do not let the temperature rise above 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a candy thermometer if needed.

Step 3

Monitor the paste for consistency and color. Sufficiently cooked sugar wax is smooth and the color of amber.

Step 4

Pour the mixture into an airtight container and let cool to room temperature.

Sugar Waxing Technique

Step 1

Wash your bikini area with antibacterial soap. Dry thoroughly before dusting with unscented, all-natural baby powder. This will absorb excess moisture without irritating the skin.

Step 2

Use your palms to roll a small scoop of sugar wax into a ball. Do not knead the paste excessively; doing so will overheat the wax, making it stickier and less able to grip the hair.

Step 3
Place the wax over a section of bikini line. Use your fingertips to flatten the paste until it is about 1/4 inch thick.

Step 4

Remove the wax by pinching one edge and pulling quickly in the direction of hair growth. According to "Milady's Hair Removal Techniques," this will help avoid breakage and follicle damage.

Step 5

Repeat the process on another section of bikini hair until the area is smooth. Wipe away any residual wax with a damp washcloth.

Tips and Warnings
  • Sugaring works best on hair that is 1/4 inch to 1 inch long. If necessary, trim hair before treatment. You can use the same ball of sugar wax multiple times in one sitting. Discard when the wax becomes too sticky or clogged to effectively pull out hair.
  • Sugaring should be avoided if skin is broken, irritated or inflamed.

Things You'll Need
  •  2 cups sugar
  •  1/4 cup lemon juice
  •  1/4 cup water
  •  Saucepan
  •  Spoon
  •  Candy thermometer (optional)
  •  Airtight container
  •  Baby powder
  •  Washcloth

Bikini Hair Removal Creams

Bikini Hair Removal Creams

Get rid of unsightly hair in your bikini area with creams designed to safely remove hair from the delicate area. Use creams that have active natural ingredients and moisturizers to avoid skin irritation such as bumps and rashes. If you have coarse hair, creams may be more effective than shaving because they remove hair from the root and may keep you from having to frequently shave.

Nair Bikini

Depending on your hair type, this cream can remove hair along your bikini line in as little as three minutes. If you have sensitive skin, Nair also comes formulated with green tea extracts for added moisture and minimal irritation. All bikini creams from Nair’s product line dissolve hair below the surface and results can last for up to four weeks.

Bikini Zone Crème

This hair remover is fortified with green tea, aloe and chamomile to soothe your bikini area and prevent stubble and irritation. This cream is designed to remove hair from your bikini line in as little as three minutes. Aloe vera and vitamin E help keep your skin from turning red and prevent stubble. Other active ingredients include mineral oil, sweet almond oil and glycerin for added moisture--especially good if you have sensitive skin.

GiGi Hair Removal Cream

In as little as five minutes, this effective cream removes hair from below the surface of your skin and leaves the area moisturized and stubble-free. Cucumber and aloe vera help prevent skin irritation during hair removal and a calming balm for cooling is included for application immediately after hair removal. The calming balm helps prevent bumps, ingrown hairs, redness and any other discomfort.

How to Shave the Bikini Area Without Getting Ingrown Hair

How to Shave the Bikini Area Without Getting Ingrown Hair

If you get ingrown hairs along your bikini line, the cause may be the perfectly executed close shave that gave you a hair-free zone only a few days before. Ingrown hairs are likely to result after a method of hair removal such as shaving, which leaves the tip of the hair follicle with a sharp tip. Factor in the natural curl and coarse texture of hair in very personal part of your body, and ingrown hairs--those that grow back toward the follicle rather than straight out--can almost be expected. If you want to shave your bikini area without getting ingrown hairs, this means parting ways with close shaving techniques.

Step 1

Use the a single-blade razor to reduce your risk of getting ingrown hairs. While a razor with the double- or triple-bladed head or cartridge will no doubt give you a tight, close shave, these tools are also most irritating to your hair follicle.

Step 2

Exfoliate before you shave rather than after. Skincare expert Paula Begoun points out that flaking skin can prevent your razor from getting the right traction. She advises using a mild sugar scrub or an exfoliant that contains alpha or beta hydroxy acids before you pick up the razor.

Step 3

Make sure your skin is wet--but not barely damp or thoroughly saturated--before you shave the bikini line. Begoun notes that your skin should be wet for between two and three minutes before you begin shaving (Mayo Clinic experts advise using warm water). This makes hair more flexible and easier to shave.

Step 4

Apply a lubricating shaving gel or shaving cream along the bikini line. Begoun cautions against products that contain irritating ingredients, such as alcohol, menthol or peppermint. If you're in a pinch, use body wash or hair conditioner rather than a bar of soap, she advises.

Step 5

Shave in the direction of hair growth. Although shaving against the hair follicle will give you a closer shave and smoother skin, this is a primary cause of ingrown hairs, says the Mayo Clinic. Rinse the razor in water after each stroke.

Step 6

Apply an aspirin-based anti-inflammatory to the bikini line after you shave. The cosmetic scientists at The Beauty Brains recommend Tend Skin or Paula's Choice Skin Relief Treatment. If you can't find these products, you can make your own anti-inflammatory by crushing up a couple of aspirin in 1/4 cup of water and adding glycerin gel until you achieve the right consistency.

Step 7

Avoid wearing tight clothing, including jeans and athletic clothing, advises the Mayo Clinic. These can rub against your skin and exacerbate ingrown hairs.

Tips and Warnings

  • If the above methods don't work to effectively give you a hair-free bikini line or if you continue to experience ingrown hairs, consider another method of hair removal that's more permanent, such as laser hair removal or electrolysis. If you get ingrown hairs as a result of shaving the bikini line that don't resolve with anti-inflammatories, Begoun suggests applying an over-the-counter cortisone cream.
  • Don't squeeze or pick at ingrown hairs along your bikini line. According an article in "Cosmopolitan," this can cause infection and scarring. Cosmo advises exfoliating the bikini line with a product that contains salicylic acid or glycolic acid to get rid of the dead skin cells that are trapped by the ingrown hair.

Things You'll Need

  • Single-blade razor (recommended)
  • Lubricating shaving gel or shaving cream
  • Mild scrub or exfoliant
  • Aspirin-based anti-inflammatory

How to Remove Bikini Hair

How to Remove Bikini Hair

Removing bikini hair -- the hair around the pubic area -- with hard wax is a proven method to provide weeks of hair-free freedom. You can purchase hard wax kits and the supplies needed, and wax your bikini hair in the convenience of your own home. Before you start your bikini waxing, check the length of the hair you plan to remove; it must be long enough to be waxed, at least ¼ inch long.

Step 1

Clean the area to be waxed. Skin should be clean and dry, free of oils, lotions, creams and perspiration.

Step 2

Prepare the wax by warming it. The range of heating times is a guide that varies based on the hard wax purchased; suggested times are listed on the kit packaging or the wax jar itself. Individual microwaves may vary as well, so heat wax for the minimum time first. Repeat at shorter intervals as needed until the wax is warm and a thick consistency like honey. Test the wax on the inside of your wrist; the wax should be warm, not hot.

Step 3

Apply wax in small sections at a time, starting with the outer bikini area first. Determine the direction of hair growth, and apply wax in the same direction. Hair often grows in several directions in the same area; work on one small area at a time for accuracy. Use a wooden stick or tongue depressor to spread a layer of wax over one section. Leave the wax thicker at the end for a better grip and easier hair removal, and make sure to spread it past the edge of the hair. Let the wax harden before removing it. If the wax is not hard enough when removed, it will not take away all of the hair.

Step 4

Remove the wax by using the part of the wax that is not attached to hair as a tab to remove it. Gently lift the edge of the wax, holding the skin taut with the other hand. Very quickly pull the wax in the opposite direction of the hair growth. If you do not pull it quickly enough, it will not take all the hair off. After, place the non-pulling bare hand on the area immediately to relieve some of the pain.

Step 5

Repeat with each additional section until all the hair is removed. Some strands of hair may be resistant and require a tweezers to remove.

Step 6

Soothe the area with a cream to help with the inflammation and redness that are typical after waxing, says certified esthetician Moira Dunn from Issaquah, Wash. She suggests you choose a cream with anti-inflammatory agents such as vitamin E or vitamin C, and avoid any immediate sun exposure to the waxed area.
